The Guernsey Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce a further expansion of football participation opportunities for girls in Guernsey, with new SSE Wildcat Centres being confirmed at five local primary schools. These training sessions, which are being held at La Mare De Carteret, Castel, Amherst, La Houguette and Hautes Capelles, offer girls aged 5-11 regular opportunities to play football and take part in fun and engaging activities created just for girls.
Each SSE Wildcats club is run by the GFA’s qualified coaches who will help girls learn lots of different skills, whether you’ve kicked a football before or not! GFA Women & Girls Development Officer, Joelle Pengelley, commented that;
‘The new Wildcat sessions this year are all part of the new programme for girls aged 5-11 from who are being invited to attend a girls football based afterschool club for a period of two half terms. The girls will participate in activities that will develop their technical ability with a ball and also play lots of matches to build a tactical understanding of the game and introduce the girls to the rules of football. The mix of age groups really helps bring out the leadership qualities of the older girls and they lead by example and the younger girls develop their listening skills and ability to take instructions and concentrate for the full hour. The improvement that is evident in the girls who have attended Wildcat session previously encompasses the ability to play football but also the ability to work in a team and problem solve with others. I am excited to see the programme take off and collaborate with the schools to engage more girls in football in a safe and fun environment aiding the development of women and girls football for the future.’
