Girls Wildcat Centres in Guernsey

The SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Clubs aim to be a safe environment where girls can have fun, develop new skills and create foundations for a lifelong love of sport.

There are hundreds of SSE Wildcats Girls‘ Football Clubs across Great Britain, all helping to achieve the Football Association’s goal of doubling women and girls’ football participation by 2020. The Guernsey FA is pleased to confirm that it has been allocated two new Wildcat clubs, which will start in the coming months. These clubs will be running at Styx Community Centre and also at La Mare De Carteret Primary School.

The Styx Wildcat session will be held every week on Wednesdays from 3.30-4.30pm, with the first session starting on 16th April 2018 and continuing until the Summer Holidays.  All girls aged 5-11 who live near Styx Community centre are welcome to come along to these free sessions to try football, with those who have attended the Deloitte after-school clubs at La Houguette, Forest and St Martins being invited to attend these sessions as a progression from the school clubs.

The second Wildcat club will be available to girls in years 1-4 at La Mare De Carteret, with this being the first time a designated Wildcat programme has been delivered in a local primary school. These weekly sessions will take place in after-school sessions.

Guernsey FA Football Development Officer for Women and Girls, Joelle Pengelley, commented that:

The purpose of the Wildcat programme is to ensure that every week, girls aged 5 – 11 are given the opportunity to get involved in football through fun sessions that encourage friendships, character-building and fitness/healthy lifestyle. Being awarded two new Wildcat Clubs is testament to the growing popularity of football amongst girls in Guernsey and the support that the GFA has received in developing this area of the sport through our existing local partners, Ravenscroft and Deloitte, which has seen significant growth in participation in recent years. These Wildcat Clubs are yet another opportunity for girls to get involved for the first time or for those already playing, to enjoy another opportunity to play regularly.’
