Girls Can Play

Find out more

Through the work of the Guernsey Football Association, and particularly that of Women & Girls Development Officer, Joelle Pengelley, there have never been as many opportunities for girls of all ages to get involved in football. With After-School Clubs, Girls Player Development Centre, Girls Academy, Festivals, School tournaments and Guernsey Ladies FC, there is now an abundance of participation opportunities and a coordinated approach to establishing an identifiable pathway for girls that culminates with Representative football.

After-School Clubs

During the last Academic Year (2016/17), a total of 18 After-School Clubs were delivered across the local Primary Schools, which provided a new participation opportunity that was enjoyed by over 250 individual girls aged between five and seven.  These After-School Clubs, which are delivered through the Community Partnership with Deloitte, will commence once again in October of the current Academic Year.

Girls Player Development Centre

The Girls Player Development Centre (GPDC), which is partnered by Ravenscroft, was introduced during the 2014/15 Season and is used to provide focussed coaching for girls aged between five and eleven. These free sessions are the first stage in the Girls Pathway and provide high quality age appropriate sessions that are designed to complement other football participation opportunities in local Clubs.

Sessions are held weekly on a Monday from 4.00pm-5.00pm at St Sampsons High School, with the first session of the current season taking place on Monday 18th September.

Girls Academy

The Girls Academy is the second stage in the Girls Pathway and provides opportunities to progress from the Ravenscroft GPDC. These weekly sessions are also free and with a direct link into Guernsey Ladies FC, and the opportunity to play in age-group Representative matches, the Girls Academy provides exciting opportunities to learn, develop and be challenged.

Sessions are held weekly as follows:

  • Under 12 – Under 15 (Year 7, 8, 9 & 10) Monday 5.30pm - 7.00pm at St Sampsons High School
  • Under 12 – Under 15 (Year 7, 8, 9 & 10) Thursday 5.30pm - 7.00pm at Victoria Avenue

2017/18 training commences from Monday 18th September.

Representative Football

In June of this year, Guernsey hosted the first Girls Representative matches against Jersey in the Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 age groups. These matches were a great success and as a consequence it is expected that they will become an annual event. Selection to play in these matches comes through attendance at the Girls Academy and also through participation in the annual secondary school football tournaments.

Guernsey Ladies FC

Guernsey Ladies FC is the senior element of the Girls Pathway and provides local participation opportunities for women and girls aged 15 and over. This element of the Pathway is fundamental in providing a direct link into Senior Representative football, with the opportunity to represent Guernsey in a home Island Games in 2021 being at the forefront of planning.

Sessions are held weekly as follows:

Wednesday evening from 6.30pm-8.00pm at Victoria Avenue

Sunday morning from 11.00am – 12.30pm at Victoria Avenue
