Mourant Girls Academy

Mourant commits support to Guernsey womens football for a further three years

Mourant has committed its continued support to the Guernsey Football Association (FA) in delivering the Girls Academy for girls aged nine to 16, as well as the Senior Women's Guernsey Representative team, until 2026. The local firm is a longstanding supporter of women's football in Guernsey.

The Guernsey FA aims to continue its work in increasing the number of women and girls participating in a competitive sporting environment. In recent years, demand for opportunities to enter the sport has continuously increased and as a result the Guernsey FA Girls Academy has expanded to include girls from year four for the current 2023-24 season. This aligns with Guernsey FA's Girls Pathway programme, and replicates the male equivalent academy offering for the under nines to under 16s age groups.

The Girls Academy began weekly training in October 2023 and will continue to train weekly until April next year. They also have a schedule of fixtures arranged against local teams.

Meanwhile, the Senior Women's team is continuing its preparations for the annual Muratti tournament. Introduced in 1905, the yearly event sees teams from Guernsey, Alderney and Jersey compete. Plans are underway for the 2025 Muratti tournament to be hosted at the new Guernsey stadium which is currently being built. What's more, this event will be hosted on the same day as the Men’s Senior Muratti, something that hasn’t been done in recent history.

The Senior Women's team is also working towards the next International Island Games, due to take place on the Scottish island of Orkney in 2025. Founded in 1985, the Island Games are a biennial sporting celebration where athletes from islands across the globe compete in a range of sporting events. Originally, the competition was intended as a one-off, but over the years has grown into a hugely successful international event.

During this year's 2023 Island Games, which were hosted in Guernsey, the Senior Women's team experienced great levels of support and attracted large crowds to their matches. This included many young girls who were watching with the ambition to follow in the footsteps of the representative players.

John Lewis, Managing Partner of the Mourant Guernsey office, commented:

"I'm delighted that Mourant will be continuing to support the Guernsey Football Association's Girls Academy and Women's Representative team for the next three years.

"The Guernsey FA and Girls Academy are an integral part of our local community here in Guernsey. Their commitment to supporting local people, particularly youth players, develop and excel in their sport, as well as growing girls' and women's football, closely aligns with our firm's focus on teamwork, development and inclusion. We wish all the Guernsey FA teams the very best of luck for the season."
