Charity Golf Day Celebrates 125 Years of Guernsey Football

Today, Friday 26th April, will see the Guernsey Football Association (GFA) host a charity golf day in partnership with Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG) at the Royal Guernsey Golf Club; proceeds of which will be split equally between the two charities.

Phil Sykes, GFA Director and organiser of the event, comments;

‘Every year we host a golf day in aid of MUG and this year it is great to be able to support them once again alongside the GFA. We always have a great turnout for what is a fun day out for teams, whether they’re a group of family and friends or colleagues. This year will see teams of four will tee off at staggered times and make their way around the 18-hole course. Prizes will be available for those who play the best game and one event sponsor will be giving out a prize for closest the point on their chosen hole. We are grateful for the support that both Praxis IFM and Doyle Motors have given to the event and the two charities as the headline partners.’

Trevor Kelham, Chairman of MUG, says;

‘We’re really grateful to the Royal Guernsey Golf Club for putting this event on as it not only helps raise much-needed funds but also awareness for the charity. It’s great that we are able to share this with the GFA, 125 years is a fantastic achievement. We’re big supporters of them and have worked together in the past on the Check Your Balls campaign.

MUG is a local charity which aims to increase the awareness of male cancers and to help those who are affected by prostate, bowel and testicular cancer. It strives to highlight the importance of early detection, encouraging men to go and get any health concerns checked.

The GFA is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year and is the guardian of football in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, delivering league and cup football for all age groups. The charity also looks after the Muratti cup, one of the oldest competition and trophies in British football.

Gary Roberts, GFA Chief Executive added:

‘It’s amazing that we are in our 125th year and I’m so proud of the work we have done and will continue to do on the island. We’re really looking forward to this event, which is the latest in the series of events we have scheduled to mark the Association’s anniversary. As a not for profit organisation, all of the proceeds from this charity golf day will be reinvested back into the local game for the benefit of the football and wider local community.’
