Deloitte Corbet Cup and Shield Kick-Off

The first round of Deloitte Corbet Cup and Sheild matches have been played this season, with 13 teams taking part in the league.

The under-12 tournament has 221 players across the two divisions, with six teams taking part in the Deloitte Corbet Cup and seven in the Deloitte Corbet Sheild. They are competing to finish in the top four positions in their respective divisions, ensuring their qualification for the end of season knockout stage.

After the first round of games, Northerners AC and Sylvans Red are leading the table in the Corbet Cup division, with Bodyline St Martins and Rihoy North currently leading the way in the Corbet Shield.

It’s all still to play for though as the teams will participate in many more matches throughout the season when they have a chance to consolidate their position or climb further up the league table.

As part of Deloitte’s sponsorship, the Guernsey FA has commenced the delivery of its community coaching programme through primary school PE lessons, along with after-school and lunchtime clubs for girls.

This initiative will run throughout the year, including a new girls-only Active Literacy programme for primary schools. This aims to improve literacy skills through sport-themed activities which are also designed to get young girls into football.

Guernsey FA Chief Executive, Gary Roberts says: ‘Thanks to sponsorship from firms like Deloitte we have seen a growth in participation numbers in the Corbet Cup as well as new initiatives like the Active Literacy scheme.

‘It’s a testament to the invaluable work and coaching being delivered within the local clubs and schools. It also wouldn’t be possible without the commitment of our amazing volunteer coaches, who work hard to gain their football coaching qualifications.

David Becker from Deloitte said: ‘It is fantastic to see how much the Deloitte Corbet Cup has grown. The tournament is much-loved in the Guernsey football scene and is a big step for budding young players in their footballing future.

‘Deloitte became the GFA’s community partner and has sponsored the GFA for over 12 years.  At Deloitte we firmly believe in fostering and nurturing young talent, so we are proud to be able to contribute to the island community through local football.’
