Football Futures for Young Volunteers in Guernsey

    •

Are you a young person currently volunteering within local football – or somebody considering whether to get involved? If so, the FA Football Futures programme could be perfect for you.

The FA Football Futures Leadership and Volunteering programme has been initiated with the objective to recruit, retain, develop, reward and provide a progressive pathway for young leaders in order to develop a skilled football workforce. The FA Football Futures programme is unique in that it provides young volunteers with the opportunity to choose what, where and how they wish to volunteer in football across six different but closely linked football themes.

Who is the programme for?

The programme is targeted towards any young person aged between 14 to 19, who has an interest in getting involved in football leadership and volunteering. This can be in a range of local environments such as a school, college, FA Charter Standard Club or League or other likeminded partner. Young Leaders can choose from a range of football related activities. These include the opportunity to assist with the coaching or running of a team, acting as the press officer for a junior league, refereeing or being a Respect Ambassador to name but a few.

What are the benefits?

The overriding benefit of the Football Futures programme lies in the valuable experience and skill development, which young leaders will gain through their training that they can then apply to all walks of life. Upon joining the programme, young leaders will be offered support to gain football related qualifications in coaching football or refereeing qualifications. Whilst the programme is football orientated, it also provides young volunteers with other intangible benefits that will develop skills and experience and enhance future employability.

Young Leaders can track their volunteer hours and gain FA certification at the following milestones;

10 Hours
25 Hours
50 Hours
75 Hours
100 Hours
125 Hours
150 Hours
175 Hours
200 Hours

Any young leader, who reaches more than 200 hours, can be nominated by Guernsey County FA for additional rewards.

What are the FA Football Futures Themes?

Students can choose to volunteer against as many of the following football related themes:

1. Coaching and Working with Teams
Opportunities include coaching or working with a team at school, college or FA Charter Standard Club level. This could be as small an involvement as assisting an experienced coach, to leading individual coaching sessions, to working with a team on a regular basis in training and also on match days.

2. Refereeing
Refereeing games within school, college or club football on a voluntary basis. Young leaders can get involved in refereeing small–sided games, intra school football or chose to focus on 11v11 football and become part of the National Referee Development programme.

3. Running and Supporting Events
Assisting in the coordination and organisation of an event(s). It can be any kind of event from intra school football to regional/national tournaments.

4. Running and Developing the Game
Assisting in the running of an FA Charter Standard Club or League or an intra-school league. This can involve a variety of roles such as supporting the fixtures secretary, taking committee meeting minutes or writing development plans to increase participation.

5. Promoting the Game
Promoting the Game can relate to any number of activities including creating a Facebook group for your club, team or league, running a website or writing match reports for local media.

6. RESPECT Ambassador
Ensuring that all players have signed up to the Respect Codes of Conduct, putting up Respect barriers and ensuring that teams all understand the competition rules and regulations. This work is to ensure that the club, league, school or college Respect practices are adhered to and is rewarded through the programme.

What is the cost?

Nothing! The only cost is your voluntary time, which you may already be giving, but not receiving recognition and reward for!
