FA Inter-League Cup

On Saturday 2nd December, the representative team of the Guernsey Priaulx League, managed by Steve Sharman, will travel to play against the Essex and Suffolk Border League in the Second Round of the FA Inter-League Cup competition.

The FA Inter-League Cup (Formerly NLS Cup) is limited to leagues at Step 7 of the National League System and other leagues as decided by The FA. It was created with the intention of finding a winning league representative side to fly the flag for England in the UEFA Regions Cup. The competition is strictly for amateur players who have never been under a written professional contract.

The inaugural NLS Cup began on 20 September 2003, when the Liverpool Combination beat the Northern Alliance 1-0. But it was thanks to that UEFA tournament that it was created. The UEFA Regions Cup was established in 1999 to provide an opportunity for amateurs playing at the lower levels of the game to take part in a European competition.

For the 2002-03 UEFA Regions Cup, The FA had nominated the Kent County League as England’s representative. They were chosen from 12 leagues which had indicated an interest in being involved. The Kent side went on to finish second in a qualifying competition hosted by Estonia, just failing to make it through to the Finals in Germany.

UEFA then decreed that, for future competitions, National Associations would only be able to nominate sides which had won a National Competition. As there was no such competition in England at that time, it was decided to develop one. The first winners of The NLS Cup were the Mid-Cheshire League. Guernsey has also tasted success in the competition when defeating the Liverpool County Premier League 5-2 in the 2009/10 final held at The Track, which led to the island representing the English FA at the UEFA Regions tournament held in Croatia where they beat the representative team from Wales, drew with Croatia and lost against group winners Turkey.

Sharman, who is being assisted by the GFA’s new Senior Men’s Representative Manager, Chris Tardif, has selected a strong squad to travel to play against the Essex and Suffolk Border League, which has in recent years provided the Jersey FA’s pre-Muratti warm-up opposition. The same squad represented Guernsey against the RAF last week, when losing a hard-fought match 1-0. The full squad, which includes players from six of the nine Priaulx clubs is:

GKs - Jason Martin (St Martins); Leroi Riley (Manuzur)

Defenders - Damian Larkin (Vale Rec); Louis Graham (Rovers); Louis Falla (Rovers); Tom Strawbridge (Rovers)

Midfielders - River Marsh (North); Luke Mollet (North); Stuart Rousell (North); Aaron Mahieu (North); Sam Hall (Rovers); Blair Howitt (Rovers); Tyler McKane (Rovers); Sebastian Smeed (Sylvans)

Strikers - Sam Murray (North); Fin Whitmore (Rovers); John Hunt (Manzur)

The match will be played at the home ground of Coggeshall Town FC with a 12.30pm kick-off
