Through the direct support of the Guernsey FA Women & Girls Development Officer, Joelle Pengelley, the Year 8 & 9 school girls tournament held at Ladies College on Thursday 9th February proved to be another successful event.
The tournament, which was played in a 9v9 format, was held on the playing fields at Ladies College with 62 girls from La Mare de Carteret, St Sampsons High School and Ladies College participating. Taking on a ‘Euro’ based theme to enhance the competitive element, the girls represented England, Scotland, Portugal, Netherlands, Germany and Spain in a round robin competition. After all matches were completed, it was Portugal (St Sampson’s High) that were the winning team, although the results were very close.
Women & Girls Development Officer, Joelle Pengelley commented that;
‘All of the girls had a fun and enjoyable experience of football that day. Some of those that participated already had an involvement in the sport, whilst there were many that were trying the sport for the first time and all enjoyed playing alongside friends in what was a competitive tournament that combined the fun social element. It was great to see the team work, skill and determination that were on show at this event and we hope to organise another schools based tournament for this age group, which would be an indoor small sided format’.
‘Moving forward from this event, each of the participating girls will be offered to opportunity to become a member of the Guernsey FA Girls Academy U14 squad that will train on a weekly basis as we develop a squad to participate against Jersey FA’s Centre of Excellence U14s on Sunday 14th May 2017 and Plymouth Argyle Girls within the year. This is all part of the continued work to develop a sustainable female football pathway as we focus on ‘Goal 21’, with the aim being to develop a competitive and successful Senior Women’s Representative team for the home Island Games in 2021 and beyond. Many of the girls that competed in this recent tournament have the ability, potential and opportunity to form the core of the squad that will represent Guernsey in that Island Games’.
‘In addition, the girls will also be offered the opportunity to join the youth section of Guernsey Ladies FC, which also trains on a weekly basis.’
Training times for girls in school years 8 & 9 are:
Guernsey FA Academy: Monday, 4.00-5.00pm @ St Sampson High School
Guernsey ladies FC: Thursday, 5.30-6.30pm @ Victoria Avenue
